Welcome to the 2015 – 2016 school year!!
It is hard to believe that the summer is ending and fall will soon be upon us. Everyone seems to be settling in nicely and there are plenty of smiling faces in the school and on the playground. I have already had the pleasure of reacquainting myself with so many of you, especially around our new benches and look forward to meeting our new families attending CDS.
I am very passionate about the opportunity to continue to work collaboratively with everyone to ensure high quality learning for everyone and create memorable experiences during this journey. I encourage you to always engage in opportunities for open communication and invite you to engage in dialogue about your child’s learning often with me.
There has been a lot of that has taken place at the school over the summer and there are some changes and updates that I would like to highlight.
There are a few changes and additions to staffing. First to our teaching staff, we are welcoming Mr. Cummings to our Learning Centre, Mrs. Smith to Grade 2, Mr. Johnston to Grade 4, Ms. Lovett to Grade 5 and Mrs. Breckon to Grade Primary with Mrs. Woodland. Additionally we have two new additions to our teaching assistant staff with Mrs. Camp and Ms. Ashe. Finally, in the office we are welcoming Ms. Seager and Ms. Armstrong to our administrative assistant staffing.
Over the summer there was a lots of work done to our playgrounds. In almost all cases the border surrounding the play structures were replaced and/or repaired and the depth of the pea gravel on all structure was increased significantly. The increased depth of gravel greatly improves the safety of our our structures in the even of falls. Regrettably the large orange slide on the 3-5 playground was in need of upgrades and repairs that were not currently feasible and it has been removed. Additionally at the entrance of the school we cut back some of the greenery put down some gravel and added some benches. I hope that both students and parents find the benches welcoming and that they get well used.
Visitors (including parents) to our school, during school hours (from 7:40 am to 2:12 pm), may enter our building only through the Main Entrance. Upon entering the building, visitors are asked to please report to the main office and talk with one of our administrative staff. Visitors are to remain in the lobby area. This change means that during morning drop-off, parents will need to leave students at the lobby and allow them to walk to class and cafeteria independently. During dismissal, our intercom system allows us to speak directly with any classroom and students can easily be brought to the lobby area, if necessary. Additionally, if picking students up for lunch, visitors should remain in the lobby until the student is dismissed. We greatly appreciate your support as we do our best to keep our school safe and focused on learning. The need and desire for volunteers at CDS remains the same and I encourage you to talk to your child’s classroom teacher or myself for opportunities to engage.
